reviews in brief 98 - "Quarters far"

Jiro Taniguchi, far District, Coconino Press / Fandango, 2010 (414 pp., € 19.50)

The idea is not new. So from memory, I could cite at least four or five films that exploit it.
The idea is this: who has ever wanted to relive some episodes of his life? Correct errors, fool, stupid carelessness the thousand of which is studded with our lives? A
Hiroshi Nakahara, middle-aged clerk, it happens just this occasion. By a strange time warp (which is not provided any explanation) is reviving its fourteen. Or rather, is projected back in time with the body of a fourteen year old, but with the mind and memories of an adult.
After the first loss, takes advantage of what we would do tutti: diventa bravissimo a scuola, umilia il compagno che l'aveva sempre disprezzato, conquista la ragazzina alla quale non aveva mai avuto il coraggio di rivolgere la parola.
Qui, la vicenda si concentra sulle piccole storie dei piccoli uomini che popolano la provincia giapponese dei primi anni Sessanta, ricostruita con affettuosa minutiae, and turns into a kind of Bildungsroman in reverse: not a boy who learns to become an adult but an adult, dealing with the boy himself, is able to rethink his life.
All told with style and slightly deeper than is typical of Taniguchi.

PS: A film version (French) of the comic strip is scheduled for release this year.

PPS: the book was already released in 2006 under the title "In a distant town," published by Rizzoli.

PPPS: the last page, it is indicated that the tip of the balloon, to adapt to the direction of West Reading, was operated for precise determination of the author; pity that in the order of some cartoons baloons remained the original one and would introduce some ambiguity in reading it.
