Pierre Vidal-Naquet, The Black Hunter . Forms of thought and forms of social articulation in the world ancient greek , Feltrinelli 2006 (386 pp., € 40)

Anyone who has ever occupied, even tangentially, in ancient Greece can not have met the name of Pierre Vidal -Naquet, for example, in fundamental studies published on the tragedy with Jean-Pierre Vernant .
"The Black Hunter," (the original French edition of 1981) shows, apparently, as a collection of essays already published elsewhere and Spaziante in rather different areas: the concept of space and time in ancient Greece, some social figures “marginali” nella società greca, quali l'adolescente, la donna, lo schiavo, l'artigiano; le teorizzazioni circa la città, nella quale ovviamente Platone fa la parte del leone.
Temi spesso astrusi per chi non abbia familiarità con le complesse questioni filologiche, archeologiche e storiche affrontate dall'autore, che da parte sua concede ben poco al lettore sprovveduto, mostrando tutto il fronte della sua vasta erudizione.
In realtà, “Il cacciatore nero” è un'opera profondamente unitaria, ma la sua unità si ritrova non tanto nei temi, quanto nella prospettiva teorica e metodologica adottata da Vidal-Naquet. Prospettiva esemplificata nel sottotitolo: “Forme di pensiero e forme d'articolazione sociale”.
Lo scopo è di trovare il punto d'unione tra la dimensione simbolica (il pensiero) e quella materiale (la società): cercare le intersezioni, gli snodi, le infinite azioni e retroazioni attraverso cui le due dimensioni si influenzano a vicenda.
Ciò equivale anche a superare gli steccati metodologici, facendo interagire filologia e antropologia, storia sociale e storia della filosofia, archeologia e mitologia, testo e contesto; superando, ad esempio, sia le aride secche strutturaliste (il pensiero assoluto, staccato dalla storia) sia l'ortodossia di stampo sociologico-marxista (il pensiero asservito alle contingenze storiche):
Come scrive l'autore stesso (pp. 155-156):
